Helping Survivors Heal Emotionally

At Hope’s Door New Beginning Center, we understand that emotional trauma resulting from abuse can be just as devastating as physical trauma for survivors. Our expert therapists offer trauma-informed care for survivors and their children to assist them in healing emotionally. We offer free counseling for adults, children and all survivors of domestic abuse. Please note that we cannot counsel survivors who live out-of-state (even virtually) because our counselors are only licensed in Texas.

Individual Counseling

Hope’s Door New Beginning Center offers free group and individual counseling services for men and women who are affected by domestic abuse or family violence. All counseling services are provided by Licensed Professional Counselors, Licensed Social Workers, LPC-Interns, LMFT-Associates, and Master Level Interns.

Children's Counseling

The purpose of Hope’s Door New Beginning Center’s Children’s Program is to support children and adolescents healing from family violence and abuse. Children’s reactions are varied and can range from the absence of noticeable trauma symptoms to severe adjustment disorders. The impact of abuse varies according to factors such as age, gender, support, and stage of development. Intervention is one of the most important factors in the healing process of children after abuse has occurred.

Group Support

In addition to one-on-one counseling for individuals, group counseling sessions are available to all of our clients. Individual sessions are offered by appointment and group sessions are offered weekly. By working with the expert therapists at our Outreach Centers in Plano and Garland, individuals come to understand the impact of abuse and develop new coping skills that allow them to function better and live self-sufficiently.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Counseling

Can I receive counseling if I live out of state?

Although we can help survivors who live out-of-state with our other services, we cannot counsel out-of-state survivors (even virtually) because our counselors are only licensed in Texas.

How do my family and I start counseling with HDNBC?

To begin counseling, you must already be a client at HDNBC or complete an intake to become a client. You can call our mainline to discuss your plans for solutions, and a receptionist will schedule your intake with either a Case Manager or Counselor. Once your intake is completed, a counselor with matching availability will contact you to begin counseling.

Individualized and group therapy is available in-person, via the phone, and virtually, in English, Spanish, and Chinese. Because each situation is unique, our therapists utilize a variety of approaches that may include individual or group programs to provide the best path for healing. During the first appointment (intake), we will talk with you about your concerns, needs, and hope for the future and the kinds of programs we offer. At that time, the advocate and/or counselor will review individual and group counseling times and your availability. Access to support groups and advocacy services are available alongside counseling.

How long can I receive counseling services? How frequently can my child or I be seen?

We currently have a session limit of 20 weeks for both adults and children, though that timeframe may be extended based on client need and counselor assessment. Once your session limit is reached, your counselor will discuss options with you regarding continuance of care. That could be outside referrals, joining support groups, etc. Individual crisis counseling can decrease the longer-term impact of trauma.

What type of counseling can I expect to receive at HDNBC?

Our counselors use evidence-based treatments to better serve those in need. We operate from a trauma-informed approach and work to identify where you are in your healing journey to understand the best plan for your solutions. The counseling team is made up of trauma-informed counselors who have various clinical expertise including, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), and a Registered Play Therapist (RPT) who practices Client-Centered Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) and Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT). Our counseling team is made up of LMSWs, LCSWs, LPC-As, and LPCs as well as a group of dynamic clinical interns.

Do I need to have custody of my children to receive services?

If you do not have custody of your child and/or rights to make psychological decisions on their behalf, we will need the approval of the parent and/or guardian who does. At the time of intake or anytime afterward, you may request counseling solutions for your child, and we will discuss with you the current status of custody. If you are unsure about your custody status, we have attorneys on site who can review legal documents for you and help you interpret them. At that time, a plan is made for children’s counseling. We ask parents to also engage in an Impact of Trauma Parenting Group (4 weeks). This group assists parents in education on the impact of trauma and domestic abuse on children/parenting dynamics and how a parent can support the counseling process for their child(ren).
