We don’t talk about domestic violence. Because of that, domestic violence thrives in silence. When I started my journey as a domestic violence advocate 24 years ago, I answered a hotline call one late night and the woman on the other end of the line was a friend. Now, she hadn’t called because she knew I was working or that I even worked at a local domestic violence shelter. What she did know is that she was scared, felt alone, and had no place to go. She was suffering in silence because no one was talking about what abuse really is or what help is available.
To be able to support survivors, and to prevent domestic violence in the future, we all need to normalize talking about it openly and candidly. We need to change the conversation around domestic violence – and we need your help to do it. Having informed conversations about destic violence requires understanding what is--that it’s much more than physical abuse--and why ‘just leaving’ isn’t so simple for survivors. Check out our website for more understanding about abuse. Supporters like you can help educate your friends, families, and communities, and get those conversations started. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) and we encourage you to break the silence with us!
