Frequently Asked Questions

Who qualifies for services?

HDNBC provides services to victims of domestic, family, and intimate partner violence. All victim services are free and provided regardless of citizenship status, culture, sexuality, educational level, gender identity, relationship status, race, socio-economic status, or whether you have made a report to the police. Whether you have been a victim of domestic abuse recently, last year, or many years ago, as a child, a teenager, or an adult, as a female, male, or nonbinary person, we are available to help. It is never too late to heal. (Some individual programs may have additional qualifying criteria.)

Are hotline calls confidential? Will anyone find out that I called HDNBC?

Hotline calls are completely confidential. They are not on a recorded line, and the calls are answered from a confidential location. We will not share your information with anyone.

I’m not currently in crisis, and I’m not looking for shelter right now. Can I call the hotline even if it’s not an emergency?

Yes. Our hotline advocates are trained in safety planning and are extremely knowledgeable about all the other solutions we provide as well as other local resources.

Do you help people who don’t need shelter?

The path to healing and safety for each survivor is unique and not all survivors need shelter or are actively fleeing abuse. All solutions listed are available regardless of whether a survivor ever needs shelter.

Are your services really free of charge?

Yes.  All of our services for survivors of domestic abuse and their children are free of charge.

Do you only serve people who have experienced physical violence?

Relationship abuse is defined by behaviors that physically harm, intimidate, manipulate, or control a partner, or otherwise force them to behave in ways they don’t wish to, including through physical violence, threats, emotional abuse, or financial control. Multiple forms of abuse are usually present. People experience different types of abuse within the same family, household, or in an intimate relationship.

What happens when I call? What questions will I be asked? How can a hotline advocate help me?

Our hotline advocates are trained to help guide you through a hotline call. They will ask you a series of screening questions about the abuse. A hotline advocate can also help talk through your options, which may include shelter, case management, counseling, or legal advocacy.
