A Vital Role
Volunteers play a vital role at Hope’s Door New Beginning Center. Each year, hundreds of people donate thousands of hours to help us provide safety, shelter, healing, and hope to families affected by domestic abuse. COVID-19 has impacted how we are currently engaging our volunteers. Personal safety for our clients, staff and volunteers is a priority. We are limiting onsite volunteer opportunities at our outreach offices and emergency shelters in order to ensure this safety. Please see the current opportunities we have for volunteers listed below.
Volunteer Opportunities
Virtual Volunteer Opportunities:
- Organize a donation drive of items from our urgent needs list
- Create craft project kits with instructions for children in our shelter
- Donate non-perishable items for our food pantries
Volunteer opportunities at our Outreach Centers in Plano and Garland:
- Organizing donations (as needed)
- Administrative assistance (as needed)
Volunteer opportunities at our Resale Store in Plano :
- Assisting customers
- Organizing and sorting donations
- Maintaining the store appearance
How to get started
New volunteers complete the individual volunteer application, background check (if 18 years of age or older), and attend one new volunteer orientation session before volunteering. Orientation sessions last approximately 1 hour. To attend orientation, both the application and background check must be completed. Due to COVID 19, orientation sessions will be offered via Zoom meeting until further notice. Orientation is not offered in December and will resume in 2022.
*Individuals must be at least 16 years of age to volunteer at our resale store accompanied by a parent or guardian. Shelter volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. We do have limited group volunteer projects.

The background check is completed online and the results are automatically sent to the Volunteer Program Manager. There is a $9.95 fee for the background check.
